"Inner Landscape", 2025, ceramic

Midori UCHIDA was born in 1983 in Hyogo, Japan. After studying ceramics at Osaka University of Arts, she completed the program at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in 2007. Since then, she has been based in Gifu Prefecture, where she continues to create her works. In recent years, she has focused on carbonization firing techniques that embrace a high degree of unpredictability, developing a body of work centered on unglazed ceramics (yakishime). Through this process, she has deepened her engagement with the phenomena that emerge during firing, presenting her works in galleries and museums throughout Japan.
Uchida has consistently sought to trace the inner landscapes that dwell within herself. Her works—born from a keen observation of the subtle transformations of clay and flame, and capturing the shifting scenery within the kiln—carry both quiet lyricism and a compelling strength that transcends the mere depiction of natural phenomena.
In her latest exhibition, Trace of the Wind, Uchida presents new works in which a painterly expression seems to surface from within. Her calm, sustained observation—of time, emotional currents, and the movement of air—finds form in works that embody the unseen yet palpable presence of these forces.
