"Trace", 2025, Ceramic

Shiho Hayashi has developed organic forms that emerge from the interplay of chance and handcraft by adapting the "tracing" technique of pressing natural stones into clay to transfer their textures. The repeated act of tracing the contours of stones accumulates countless tactile memories in her hands, eventually sublimating into her own internal "memory of form." This exhibition introduces her "Recollection" series, where she revisits these memories and shapes new forms through handwork. Here, we see Hayashi responding with intention to what was once left to chance, revealing a determination to imbue her works with greater presence. Though her sculptures lack specific motifs, underlying themes of dialogue with nature and the cycle of life resonate throughout. Memories tied to her childhood experience of an earthquake, as well as her encounters with mountains and forests, breathe life into her works through acts of "circling" and "tracing." The soft, unglazed clay surfaces born from carbonized firing, her meticulous attention to minimal color and texture - they all reflect a deepening focus on form itself. Having followed her journey for over a decade, even before the gallery's founding, we now witness her steps entering a phase of deeply reexamining her roots, against the backdrop of modern ceramics and abstract sculpture. The budding expressions arising from this point stir a quiet tremor in the heart.
