Yuka Mori was born in Osaka Prefecture in 1991 and raised in Shiga Prefecture. She studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris as an exchange student and received a master’s degree in Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2016. She is currently based in Kyoto. Influenced from an early age by Buddhist art, she has a background rooted in Japanese painting. Her works draw on the relationships between figures and the earth in Japanese painting, setting the relationship between the body and the environment as their subject matter and making reference to her own physical senses and to the traditional performing art of Noh. With her Spreading Vein solo exhibit in 2019, she began sketching plants and creating paintings that take their inspiration from the physicality of plants as "entities that bi-directionally traverse boundaries in their given environment and the adjacent land, with a sensibility differing from that of humans." Taking the body as a medium that explores the boundary between the self and the other and sublimating this medium into her works, Mori creates art in which the body and the self ambiguously meld as they undergo repeated metamorphoses.
