"Light moves" 2024, Flame size: 89.7cm x 70.4cm

Natsumi Kobayashi overlaps perspectives that move between near and far, inside and outside, onto a single canvas, depicting not "what is seen" but "the act of looking itself." Although her works are prints, they are produced using the monotype technique, which does not involve reproduction, because the plates are made of thin aluminum foil, a fragile material. The production method, which she learned by herself, is inefficient and fragile, but by printing and layering fragments of her gaze on multiple plates, the shifting line of sight is made visible, and the repetition of the gaze gains strength. The subdued colors and quiet composition of the canvas embodies Kobayashi's observant eye for the act of looking at the world itself, and the depth of her gaze that finds new meaning in everyday scenery. As an extension of looking at the close-up view of everyday life, there is a view from far away. The preciousness of the accumulation of trivial everyday events makes you think about the distance from which you are looking at them.
