Shimpei Yoshida was born in Nara Prefecture in 1992. He graduated in 2014 from the Painting course at Kyoto University of the Arts. He is currently based in Tokyo. His experience as an artist-in-residence at the German artist-run space led him to create a portrait series based on found photography as well as an installation inspired by his own experiences related to the passing of his grandmother. Through his repeated depictions of a family that once existed and their gazes, while touching on the subjects of "presence and absence" and "memory and forgetting", he invites the viewer to enter into a dialogue with the invisible things that lie between them. The nebulous images are an attempt to question the dangers of the incomprehensible, the forgotten, and the invisible in the present age in which it seems as though everything that is "visible" can be shared with others.
